Are Coding and Programming the same thing and do they require the same skills?
Students would like to share and talk about their tech skills and why not? They worked hard to achieve them, but the lack of understanding of terms and finding the right words can hinder them.
It is also troubling when students are faced with writing CVs as part of their college/university application and they just can’t find the words to put forth their skills in writing.
There is a possibility that many of us have never had to think if Coding and Programming were the same thing or what skills were required in learning how to use them. We assume people should know.
Although the two words are often used interchangeably and are found in the software development section, they are different. Here we will explain the basic differences of the words.
What is coding?
Coding is like the ingredients in a chocolate cake recipe. Unless you’ve baked the cake once or twice you will not know the order for combining or mixing the ingredients. What comes first? The sugar and the butter or the flour and the butter?
Coding says, “these are the things that I want the computer (or machine) to do”, but not how. Just like a business vision and mission without the strategy.
What is programming?
Programming on the other hand is the instruction for making the chocolate cake. It tells you which ingredient to place in the bowl first, second and third. Sometimes it explains the why behind each step.
Programming languages are like the book of rules where the strategy and how to are spelt out.
Programing Languages
Computer programming languages are developed through a series of numerical or alphabetical codes, instructing machines to complete specific actions and that includes such actions as – how, when or where. Examples of these languages are Python (strange name), JavaScript and C++ (plus plus).
Programmers or developers write instructions describing the information and tasks needed to create a visual or to perform a task such as the colors on the traffic lights changing from red to green to orange.
With a programming language you can use the information to build a website, create a game, or an app step by step.
Coding and programming go hand in hand. Can’t have one without the other. We hope you can see how the two terms coding and programming can easily be used interchangeably. You can declare, “I have the chocolate cake recipe.” On close observation, you only have the ingredients. You still need the instructions.
Talking about your coding and programming skills
If you want to talk about your coding and programming achievements, here are some useful skills associated with them which you can use.
- Language acquisition: Computer code is the language that people use to communicate with computers.
- Innovative thinking: Computer coders are often self-taught and learn by making mistakes.
- Analytical skills: Besides creative skills, computer coding also requires extensive analytical skills
- Attention to detail: Coders are methodical and precise in their work since a small error can disrupt an entire computer program.
- Patience: Computer coding requires developers to remain calm and focused even when they encounter a challenge. Frequently, coding can become a process of trial and error.
- Communication: Most coding professionals in any industry coordinate, collaborate and negotiate with other coders to complete an assignment. Indeed, the Career Guide read more.
